A fluffy French Bulldog (people also say furry Frenchie or long-haired Frenchie) is a regular French Bulldog that inherited a long-hair gene from both parents. Same flat face, same bat ears, same snoring gremlin energy, just wrapped in a soft, longer coat. It's a genetics thing, not a separate breed, and it can't be shown in the AKC ring.
A lot of you have been Googling this lately, and the only page of ours you were finding was a spotlight on one fluffy boy's teeth. Fair question deserves a real answer. Here it is.
What makes a French Bulldog fluffy?
A gene called FGF5. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory says five recessive variants of FGF5 are linked to long hair in dogs, and it lists one of them (the lab calls it L4) as occurring in the French Bulldog. Its test page even notes that long hair "is also known as Fluffy in the French Bulldog."
FGF5 is a hair-length gene. It changes the coat, and that's it. A fluffy Frenchie still has the short muzzle, the bat ears, and the skin folds that every other Frenchie has.
How do two short-haired Frenchies end up with a fluffy puppy?
Because the long-hair variant is recessive, so a puppy needs two copies to grow the fluff. Here's how UC Davis explains the three possible results:
- Two short copies (S/S): short hair, and he can't pass long hair on.
- One of each (S/L): short hair, but he's a carrier and passes the long-hair copy to about half his puppies.
- Two long copies (L/L): fluffy, and every puppy he has gets a long-hair copy.
So two perfectly normal looking, short-coated parents who both carry the variant are expected to have about 25% fluffy puppies. That's how a "surprise fluffy" happens.
Is a fluffy Frenchie a purebred French Bulldog?
A fluffy coat on its own doesn't prove a dog is mixed. The variant shows up inside the breed, which is why a French Bulldog DNA test can find it. What the fluff does change is show eligibility. The AKC French Bulldog standard (approved April 10, 2018) says the coat is "brilliant, short and smooth," and lists "Coats other than short and smooth" as a disqualification. That's a rule for the show ring. It says nothing about whether he's a great couch buddy (he is).
How can you tell if a Frenchie puppy will be fluffy?
A DNA test is the only sure way. All puppies have soft baby fuzz, so guessing from a photo is a gamble. UC Davis runs the coat length test from a cheek swab, recommends waiting until puppies are at least three weeks old, and lists it at $58 per dog on its page today.
Our take if you're buying: if a breeder is charging extra for a "fluffy" or "rare" puppy, ask to see the DNA results for the puppy and both parents. A real fluffy will show two copies. A breeder who has tested will be happy to show you.
Do fluffy French Bulldogs need different care?
Mostly no. A fluffy Frenchie is still a Frenchie, so the big care list stays the same: watch the breathing, keep him lean, and keep those folds clean. If the snoring worries you, we explained what's normal and what isn't in our post on why Frenchies snore and snort.
The coat adds a little extra work. This part is our own experience, not a study:
- Brush a few times a week. Longer hair tangles behind the ears and on the "pants," and a quick brush keeps it from matting.
- Dry him all the way after a bath. Longer hair holds water against the skin and in the folds. Our guide on how often to bathe a Frenchie with itchy skin covers the bath schedule.
- Check the folds and between the toes. Fluff can hide redness you'd spot right away on a short coat.
We looked and couldn't find any study tying the long-hair variant itself to a health problem in Frenchies. If you find one, send it our way.

FAQ
Is a furry Frenchie the same as a fluffy Frenchie?
Yes. Furry, fluffy, and long-haired are all names for a French Bulldog with two copies of an FGF5 long-hair variant.
Can a fluffy French Bulldog be shown at AKC dog shows?
No. The AKC standard lists coats other than short and smooth as a disqualification.
Can two short-haired French Bulldogs have a fluffy puppy?
Yes, if both parents carry the variant. UC Davis says two carriers are expected to have about 25% long-haired puppies.
Do fluffy Frenchies shed more?
Expect more hair to brush, simply because there's more of it. Plan on a few quick brushing sessions a week.
What we'd use
For the coat: a soft brush and a good towel. Nothing we sell changes hair length, and we'd never tell you it does. We make two daily powders for every Frenchie 8 weeks and up, fluffy included: Frenchies vs Plaque & Tartar for dental health and Frenchies vs Mushrooms to support immune health.
