You don't boost it. You stop dragging it down. There is no dial on a dog you can turn up, and anyone selling you one is selling you something. What you can fix are the four things that decide how hard your Frenchie's immune system has to work: body weight, skin, gut, and what goes in the bowl. Skin comes first, because that's where this breed loses ground fastest.
What does "boosting the immune system" even mean for a dog?
Not much. It's a marketing phrase, not a measurement.
One long study got close. Purina ran a lifetime feeding trial on 48 Labrador Retrievers, published by Kealy in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2002 and reviewed by Lawler in the British Journal of Nutrition, 2008. Dogs were paired at 6 weeks and one of each pair ate 25% less food for life. Same food, just less of it.
The lean dogs lived a median of 1.8 years longer, and chronic disease showed up later. Here's the part nobody quotes: they measured immune cells too, and dogs with lower lymphocyte counts, lower T-cells and weaker immune-cell responses died earlier, regardless of group. Fat mass above 25% was tied to insulin resistance, which independently predicted lifespan and chronic disease.
Does keeping my Frenchie lean actually help?
Yes, and it's the highest-leverage thing on this page. Extra fat on a dog isn't inert padding. It's active tissue throwing off inflammatory signals all day.
A 2022 study by Hwang in Veterinary Medicine and Science pulled immune cells straight from the bloodstream of obese and non-obese dogs. In the obese dogs, TNF-alpha, IL-17 and leptin all came back significantly higher. The authors called it low-grade chronic inflammation. That's the immune system running a small fire in the background, every day.
Frenchies hide weight beautifully. They're square little tanks, so a chunky one just looks... sturdy. Do the rib test, not the eye test. Flat palm, light pressure. You should feel ribs like the back of your knuckles, not the back of your hand.
Why is skin the first thing to fix in a French Bulldog?
Because skin is an immune organ, and this breed's skin is built to fail. The Royal Veterinary College's VetCompass programme compared 2,781 French Bulldogs against 21,850 other dogs in Canine Medicine and Genetics, 2021. Frenchies had 11 times the odds of skin fold dermatitis and 14 times the odds of aural discharge (gunky ears).
Those folds are warm, damp, dark and closed. It's a spa for bacteria and yeast.
It compounds when the barrier itself is damaged. A 2024 review by Santoro in Veterinary Dermatology describes atopic dogs: reduced ceramides in the skin's lipid layer, reduced microbial diversity, overgrowth of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Malassezia. The antimicrobial peptides are still produced, they just stop working properly. Barrier and immune response fail together.
The fix is aggressively boring. Wipe and dry the face folds, tail pocket and ears a few times a week. Dry is the step people skip and it's the one that matters. If your gremlin already itches year-round, that's a separate post.
Does gut health affect a Frenchie's immune system?
Yes. Jan Suchodolski at Texas A&M opens his 2022 review in Veterinary Clinical Pathology with a flat sentence: "The gut microbiome is an important immune and metabolic organ."
You'll see a stat going around that 70% of a dog's immune system lives in the gut. We went looking for the source and only found it on supplement companies' own blogs, never in a primary paper. So we're leaving it out.
Practically: pick one complete and balanced food formulated to AAFCO nutrient profiles and stay on it. A new "hypoallergenic" bag every three weeks is churn, not care. Going homemade? The Merck Veterinary Manual is blunt that it has to come from a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. Not a Facebook group. (We love a Facebook group. Not for this.)
Do mushroom supplements boost a dog's immune system?
This is our own category, so we're going to be harder on it than a competitor would be.
The famous study is Brown and Reetz at the University of Pennsylvania, 2012. Fifteen dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma, three dose groups of turkey tail polysaccharopeptide. The top dose group hit a median survival of 199 days against a historical 86 days. We covered it in what turkey tail, reishi and shiitake each actually do.
Here's what we left out of that post and shouldn't have. Penn ran the bigger version. Gedney, Veterinary and Comparative Oncology, 2022: 101 dogs, with a real placebo group. Their conclusion, word for word: "The addition of PSP to doxorubicin post-splenectomy did not improve survival in dogs with splenic HSA." The pilot had 15 dogs and no control. The follow-up had 101 and a control, and it didn't hold up.
What that means for a healthy Frenchie: nobody should be promising you anything. A cancer trial isn't a wellness claim, and a null result in cancer isn't proof that beta-glucans do nothing in a healthy dog. It just isn't evidence that they do. We make Frenchies vs Mushrooms to support immune health and we publish every active in milligrams. That's where the facts stop and the marketing would start, so we stop there. Shopping supplements generally? Read what to look for on the label first. It'll save you money, including on us.
What should I skip?
Megadosing vitamin C. Dogs aren't people here. Per the Merck Veterinary Manual: "There is no AAFCO dietary requirement for vitamin C for dogs and cats because they are able to synthesize it from glucose in the liver." Your Frenchie makes his own.
Overheating him in the name of exercise. A Frenchie panting on hot August pavement isn't fitness, and the BOAS post covers why. Early, late, short.

Frequently asked questions
Can I support my Frenchie's immune system with food alone?
Most of it, if the food is complete and balanced and the portion keeps him lean. In the Purina lifetime study, lean-fed dogs lived a median of 1.8 years longer than their pair-mates on the identical diet.
How do I know if my French Bulldog is overweight?
Run a flat palm along his ribs with light pressure. If you can't feel individual ribs without pressing, he's carrying too much. Ask your vet for a body condition score (a 1 to 9 scale) and aim for 4 or 5.
Do probiotics help a dog's immune system?
The gut is a genuine immune organ, so the logic is reasonable. The evidence that one specific probiotic does one specific thing in a healthy dog is thinner than the marketing suggests. If your Frenchie has an ongoing gut problem, ask your vet for a product with strain-level data behind it.
What we'd use
Frenchies vs Mushrooms is our daily seven-mushroom blend, made to support immune health, skin comfort and digestion, every active listed in milligrams. It doesn't treat anything and it doesn't replace a lean dog with dry folds and a good bowl of food. It sits on top of those.
